Volleyball Sweeps Defenders at Home
(Hastings, NE) – The women’s volleyball team got back in the win column on Friday, knocking off Dordt in a three-set match that included a marathon second set (25-23, 34-32, 25-22).
(Hastings, NE) – The women's volleyball team got back in the win column on Friday, knocking off Dordt in a three-set match that included a marathon second set (25-23, 34-32, 25-22).
Hastings got the momentum early and led 12-6 on a kill from junior Ilse Benne. The Broncos continued to hold off Dordt's run throughout most of the set, but the Defenders managed to tie it at 21 late in the set. Sophomore Kaleah Olson got a kill and sophomore Mikah O'Neill had a block that put Hastings up 23-21. Leading 24-23, senior Alexis Pontine assisted freshman Klarissa Dowdy for a kill to take the opening set, 25-23. Benne had a team-high five kills in the first set.
Dordt won the first three points of the second set and later went ahead, 13-7. Hastings won five straight points, which included two kills from Dowdy and one from Benne. With Dordt leading 16-14, kills by junior Camryn Ringsdorf and Benne keyed a 4-0 run to put the Broncos up 18-16. Dordt responded with a 7-2 run to lead 23-20, but back-to-back kills by Olson and junior Amiya Barnes put the Broncos down just one at 23-22. Dordt took the next point, then kills from Dowdy and Barnes tied it at 24.
The second set would continue with lots of competitive play and neither team allowing their team to lose. Hastings continued to fight off match points until at 29-all, they took a 30-29 lead on an ace from junior Madison Navarrete. Dordt saved a set point and would later save two more set points to bring the score to 32-all. Benne's kill gave Hastings another chance at a set point and they took the set on a Defender attacking error, 34-32. Benne had six kills and freshman Fran Warson had eight assists in the second set.
Hastings won 16 of the first 25 points in the second set to go up 16-9 that included a couple of blocks and kills from Barnes and Olson. Dordt got to within three at 17-14, but the two teams would trade points until it was 23-20. After a couple of Dordt points and a Hastings timeout at 23-22, Sutter delivered a kill from Warson to create a set point. Sutter closed the match out with an ace to earn the 25-22 set three win.
Benne had a game-high 12 kills, while Olson, Sutter, and O'Neill all chipped in with seven kills. Pontine finished with 20 assists and Warson had 19 assists. Sutter had a team-high 15 digs to go along with 10 each from Warson and sophomore Lainey Benson.
