Volleyball Falls in Five-Set Match at CSM
(Omaha, NE) – The Hastings volleyball team took a 2-1 lead over the College of Saint Mary Flames, but were unable to close them out, as the Flames came back to win the fourth and fifth sets (25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 22-25, 14-16).

The Broncos led 5-2 early, capitalizing on attacking errors by the Flames. Freshman Fran Warson got back-to-back aces later in the set to take a 10-6 lead. College of Saint Mary went up 16-14, but Hastings tied it up at 18. Trailing 21-19, Hastings went on a 5-0 run, getting four kills in that span to go up 24-21. At 24-23, a Benne kill from Warson got the Broncos the first set win, 25-23.
College of Saint Marty led 8-5 in the second and while the Broncos cut the lead to one at 13-12, the Flames kept a steady lead. At 22-17, Hastings gave themselves a chance to get back in the set with three straight points to trail by two at 22-20, but College of Saint Mary won the set, 25-21.
Five of the first six points went to Hastings in the third, getting two kills from Benne and one each from sophomores Kaleah Olson and Makenna Sutter. The Flames gained momentum and took an 8-7 lead, to which Hastings answered with a 5-2 run to make it 12-10. Hastings held the lead the rest of the way and with the score at 21-20, Benne and Olson combined for a block, then Sutter and junior Amiya Barnes each got kills to go up 24-20. Three points later, the Broncos went up two sets to one with a 25-22 set three win.
The fourth set was back-and-fourth with Hastings leading 4-2 early, then both teams had consecutive 4-0 runs to make it an 8-6 Bronco lead. The Flames later tied it up at 13, then Barnes got a kill, leading to two more Bronco points for a 16-13 lead. College of Saint Mary would not go away, going on a 9-2 to take a 22-18 lead. Hastings got within two at 24-22, but the Flames forced a deciding fifth set with a 25-22 fourth set victory.
The fifth set started promising for Hastings, going up 6-4 on a kill from Barnes. Hastings went up 10-8 on a Flame attacking error and 11-9 on an Olson kill, but a 3-0 run by the Flames put them up 12-11. The teams traded points to get to 14-all, capped by a Sutter kill from senior Alexis Pontine, but back-to-back attacking errors by the Broncos gave the Flames the fifth set win, 16-14.
Benne led Hastings with 18 kills, along with 15 from Sutter and 10 from freshman Klarissa Dowdy. Benson had a team-high 27 digs, while Sutter had 19 digs and sophomore Hailey Whitmarsh had 14 digs. Pontine finished with 27 assists and 10 digs. Warson had 26 assists and 10 digs. Dowdy, Olson, and Barnes also had five blocks each.
