#17 Midland Tops Broncos in 3 Sets
(Hastings, NE) – Looking to get back to .500 in conference play, the #17 Midland Warriors kept that from happening with a 3-0 defeat (25-11, 25-16, 25-20) over the Broncos on Saturday.
(Hastings, NE) – Looking to get back to .500 in conference play, the #17 Midland Warriors kept that from happening with a 3-0 defeat (25-11, 25-16, 25-20) over the Broncos on Saturday.
The first set belonged to the Warriors from the start, jumping out to an 8-1 lead. Hastings got it to 11-6 on a couple of Midland errors, but a 10-1 run put the Warriors up 21-7, eventually winning the opening set, 25-11.
Hastings split the first six points of the second set with kills from junior Ilse Benne and sophomore Makenna Sutter, as well as an ace from sophomore Hailey Whitmarsh. With Hastings trailing 7-5, Midland went on another run, this time an 8-1 spurt to go up 15-6. The Broncos fought back by winning seven of the next nine points with kills from Benne and Sutter, making it 16-12. Holding a 20-14 advantage, Midland later closed out the second set, 25-16.
Sutter got a couple of kills early on in the third set and after an ace by junior Madison Navarrete, Hastings tied it up at six. Midland pulled ahead once more, but the Broncos tied it up again at 11 on a Benne block. The Warriors responded by winning the next seven points to gain control of the set. The Broncos managed to get within three at 22-19, but the Warriors closed out the match with a 25-20 set three win.
Sutter led the team with eight kills, along with six kills from Benne. Senior Alexis Pontine recorded 18 assists and sophomore Lainey Benson had nine digs. Junior Amiyah Barnes chipped in with two blocks.
Up next, Hastings will play at #2 Concordia on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7:30pm.
