Volleyball Falls to Tigers in Competitive 3-Set Match

(Hastings, NE) – Following a straight set win over Dordt, Hastings was unable to replicate the outcome on Saturday, as Dakota Wesleyan defeated the Broncos, 3-0 (28-26, 27-25, 25-11).
After the teams split the first 16 points of the match, Dakota Wesleyan scored three straight to go up 13-10. Hastings would later tie it up at 18 on a Tiger attacking error. With Dakota Wesleyan leading 22-20, senior Alexis Pontine set up junior Ilse Benne and sophomores Kaleah Olson and Makenna Sutter, putting the Broncos up 23-22. Hastings earned a set point at 24-23 following a Sutter kill, but the Tigers stayed alive in the set and eventually won it on their third set point, 28-26.
With the second set knotted at 10, Hastings pulled ahead to 15-11 with junior Madison Navarrete serving. Dakota Wesleyan got back to within one at 17-16, but the lead was pushed back out to four at 24-20 on a Sutter kill. The Tigers rattled off five straight points and after a Sutter kill to keep the Broncos alive in the set, Dakota Wesleyan won the last two points to claim the second set, 27-25.
The third frame belonged to the Tigers from the start, as they jumped out to a 12-4 lead. Still in control at 17-10, Dakota Wesleyan eight of the next nine points to wrap up the match, 25-11.
Sutter led the team with 10 kills, followed by eight kills from Benne and Olson. Pontine and freshman Fran Warson finished with 23 and 12 assists, respectively. Sophomore Lainey Benson had 16 digs, along with 13 from sophomore Hailey Whitmarsh and 10 from Sutter.
